“Do you like dim sum? Let’s get some soup dumplings,” Alex suggested.
Record scratch. Whaaa? You mean dumpling soup, right? I thought to myself. I have had tons of dumpling soup, but I’ve never called it soup dumpling…hmmm. But no, what A was talking about were soup dumplings, or xiao long bao. It’s exactly what it sounds like, soup inside a dumpling. Boom! Mind blown! I never heard of such a thing. As we walked to 8th Ave, I still couldn’t wrap my head around it. How can you get soup inside a dumpling? Wouldn’t biting into create a mess? How would you eat such a thing? The answer, of course, is very carefully.
Alex and I ordered soup dumplings, scallion pancakes with sliced beef, and pan-fried dumplings. My favorite were the soup dumplings. It was so good. I will definitely come back for more. Happy to say I’m no longer a soup dumpling virgin.
